Football - Ballon D'Or Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro has been named European Footballer of the Year today. He paid tribute to his national team and troubled Juventus, saying "Of course I will bring this trophy back to Madrid but I would also love to bring it to Turin". The 33-year-old defender beat international team mate Gianluigi Buffon and France and Arsenal striker Thierry Henry into second and third.

Alpine Skiing World Cup - Lake Louise John Kucera took his first-ever World Cup victory, winning the opening super-G of the season on home-snow at Lake Louise, beating Austrian Mario Schreiber by 0.06 seconds. Sweden's Patrik Jaerbyn rounded out the podium in third-place.

Alpine Skiing - Lake Louise Marco Buechel recorded victory in the opening World Cup downhill of the season at Lake Louise in Canada. The 35-year-old from Liechtenstein edged out home favourite Manuel Osborne-Paradis by a mere five hundredths, with Italian Peter Fill in third.

Alpine Skiing - Aspen Kathrin Zettel finally broke her World Cup duck by winning the second giant slalom of the season in Aspen.
