Cycling - Vuelta Francisco Jose Ventoso (Saunier Duval) held off challenges from the world's top sprinters to win the Stage 3 of the Vuelta, in a massive sprint. The 24-year-old Spaniard claimed the longest stage of the 2006 Tour of Spain (217 km), as gold jersey Thor Hushovd finished second to retain his lead.

Football - Transfers Valencia have completed the signing of Spain winger Joaquin from Real Betis for an estimated fee of €25m. The 25-year-old has signed a six-year contract.
Bayern Munich have signed the former 29 year old Barcelona midfielder Mark van Bommel for 3 seasons. The transaction fee was estimated at €6m. The germans are hoping he will fill out the empty space in the midfield left by Ballack, who joined Chelsea this summer.
